What Are The Engineering Plastics?
Engineering plastics are thermoplastics that are durable and resistant to heat, chemicals, impact and flame. They are divided into two groups according to their ability to withstand extreme environments (extreme temperature and pressure), performance characteristics and morphology;
General purpose engineering plastics
- Amorphous: Polycarbonate (PC), Polyphenyleneoxide (PPO), Polyphenylether (PPE), Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
- Semi-crystalline or crystalline: Polyoxymethylene (POM), Polyamide (PA), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)
- Amorphous: Polyetherimide (PEI), Polysulfone (PSU), Polyethersulfone (PES), Polyarylsulfone (PAS) Semi-crystalline or crystalline: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA), Polyphenylenesulfide (PPS), Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Liquid crystal polymer (LCP)
- Polyacetal (POM-C)
- Polietilen (HDPE)
- Poliamid-E (Pa 6 Extrusion)
- Döküm Poliamid (Pa 6 Cast)
- PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)
- PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)
POM is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic that stands out for its low coefficient of friction and good wear resistance, and has excellent mechanical properties.
Pom has the characteristics of not being affected by moisture, good resistance to a wide range of chemicals, good thermal resistance, high strength and toughness, and good processability. It is preferred due to its dimensional stabilization against temperature changes and humid environments.

Polyethylene (HDPE) (High density polyethylene)
Polyethylene is a thermoplastic from Polyolefin family that has properties like high abrasion resistance, low coefficient of friction, excellent resistance to chemicals, and non-absorbtion of moisture and liquid.
In addition to all these features, its good mechanical properties and easy processability have made Polyethylene the most preferred polymer, especially in food processes.

PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)
Parts made from the high-temperature plastic PEEK polymer can also operate at temperatures up to 260°C (480°F) and its melting point is around 341°C (646°F).
PEEK plastic is generally used in hot water or steam environments and largely preserves its physical properties such as flexibility and tensile strength. Polyetheretherketone is often viewed as one of the engineering thermoplastics that tend to be higher in price, but experienced users have realized the added value that PEEK materials bring by allowing to produce parts that are lighter, stronger and last longer in harsh environments.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)
PTFE Teflon has the widest operating temperature range (-250 °C, +260 °C) among high-performance plastics, high resistance to chemicals and moisture, and has very superior technical properties such as electrical insulation, non-flammability and non-stickiness. Its surface is slippery, so it does not stick and repels external factors.
In order to increase the one of the engineering plastic types is PTFE teflon's deformation resistance under load, increase its thermal and conductivity, and reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion; filled teflon alloys are obtained by adding filling materials such as pure teflon, glass fiber teflon, carbon and bronze.
